Ghazal 440
At dawn I was telling the wind the story of my longing;
a voice came: "Put your trust in the kindnesses of the Lord."
The prayer of morning and the sigh of night are the key to the treasure you seek;
go by this road and in this way, and you will be joined with the beloved.
The pen has no tongue to tell again the secret of love;
the account of longing lies beyond the bounds of telling.
O Joseph of Egypt, whom sovereignty has made proud,
ask after your father at last: where has a son's love gone?
This old, showy world has no compassion in its nature;
why do you ask after its love? Why do you fix your hopes on it?
A huma of such high worth as you: how long this greed for bones?
Alas for that shadow of high purpose which you cast on the unworthy.
If there is any profit in this market, it lies with the contented dervish;
O God, make me rich in poverty and contentment.
To the verse of Hafez of Shiraz they dance and preen:
the black-eyed of Kashmir and the Turks of Samarkand.
Your fal is full of promise: trust in God's kindness. The key to relief is prayer in the morning and devotion at night: keep to that road. If you have reached a position, do not forget those close to you and your parents. Do not set your heart on the world, and do not spend your high aspiration on the unworthy. True profit lies in sufficiency and contentment.
