Ghazal 442
By his life: if I had my own life within my reach,
it would be the least of offerings to his servants.
I would tell you the price of the dust of his foot,
if precious life were to last for ever.
The cypress would confess itself the slave of his stature,
if, like the free lily, it had ten tongues.
I do not see him even in a dream; what chance is there of union?
Since this was not to be, and we did not see him, would that at least that were.
If my heart had not been bound to his forelock,
when would it have found rest in this dark heap of dust?
In face he is, like the sun in the sky, without equal on any horizon;
in heart, alas, would that he were kind by a single grain.
Would that he came in at my door like a flash of light,
so that his command might run over our two eyes.
When would the lament of Hafez ever have escaped the veil,
had he not been the companion of the birds that sing at dawn?
You grudge nothing for the one you love, but they are far away and do not come to you even in dreams. It is this very attachment that has made life bearable for you. They are beautiful but have little kindness: accept that and moderate your expectations. Keep company with people of heart and those who rise at dawn: their sympathy will calm you.
