Ghazal 443
If, like the cypress, you stroll for a moment in a rose garden,
every rose will feel a thorn out of envy of your face.
From the unbelief of your tress, every ring holds a turmoil;
from the magic of your eye, every corner holds someone sick.
Do not go to sleep like my fortune, O drunken eye of the friend,
for on every side the sigh of someone awake is following you.
The coin of my life is scattered on the dust of your road, although
the coin of the soul has no value in your eyes.
O heart, do not always boast of the tresses of the heart-binders;
once your judgement is darkened, when will any matter open for you?
My head has gone, and this affair has not for one moment reached its end;
my heart is seized, and you felt no grief for its captivity.
I said to him: "Come, like the point, into the middle of the circle."
Laughing he said: "Hafez, what sort of compass is this?"
The one you have given your heart to is much sought after and pays little attention to your state. You have put everything you have into this and have not yet got a result. Do not let attachment darken your judgement. The plan you drew up to bring them closer is naive, and they have seen through it: review your approach.
