Ghazal 446
East wind, you carry the fragrance of that musk-scented tress;
may you remain as a keepsake, since you carry his scent.
My heart, in which lies the jewel of the secrets of beauty and love,
could be put in your hand, if you would keep it well.
Nothing can be said against that pleasing figure,
except this much: that you have harsh-tempered guardians.
How should the song of the nightingale please you, O rose,
when you give ear and mind to birds that chatter idly?
My head has grown drunk on your draught; may it do you good.
From which vat does it come, this that you have in the jug?
Do not pride yourself on your height, O cypress by the stream,
for if you came near him you would hang your head in shame.
To boast, like the sun, of the kingdoms of beauty
befits you, who have slaves with faces like the moon.
The robe of displaying beauty suits you and you alone,
for like the rose you have all the ways of colour and scent.
Hafez, do not look for the jewel of love in the corner of the cloister;
step outside, if you have a mind to seek.
A sign from the one you love has reached you: treasure it. Entrust your heart only to someone who will keep it well. They are pleasing in themselves, but those around them are harsh and they listen to the idle talk of others. If you are looking for something, do not sit in a corner: go out and search.
