Ghazal 449
O you who hold it right that lovers should be parted,
and who keep those who love you away from your side.
Reach the thirsty man in the desert with some clear water,
for the sake of the hope you place in God on this road.
You took my heart, and I have forgiven you, dear soul, but
keep it better than you are keeping me.
That others should drink from our cup:
we will not bear it, even if you allow it.
O fly, the presence of the Simurgh is no field for your flights;
you lose your own honour and give us trouble.
It is by your own fault that you have been shut out from this door;
whom do you complain of, and why do you cry out?
Hafez, with kings rank is sought by service;
having made no effort, what hope of a gift do you have?
You are suffering from the distance of someone who wants that distance themselves: ask them for a little attention. But look at yourself as well: perhaps the shortcoming was yours and that is why you have been left out. High standing is gained by service and effort, not by complaint. Do not step beyond your measure, and work for what you want.
