Ghazal 44

Now that the rose holds a cup of clear wine in its palm,
the nightingale praises it in a hundred thousand tongues.

Ask for the book of poems and take the road to the open country;
what time is this for the school and debate on the commentary?

Yesterday the jurist of the school was drunk and gave a ruling:
wine is forbidden, but better than the wealth of endowments.

Dregs or clear wine is not yours to decide; drink it down gladly,
for whatever our cupbearer does is kindness itself.

Cut yourself off from people and take your measure from the phoenix,
for the fame of those who sit in corners runs from Qaf to Qaf.

The talk of the pretenders and the fancy of the rivals
is the old story of the gold embroiderer and the mat weaver.

Be silent, Hafez, and guard these points like red gold,
for the counterfeiter of the city is the money changer.

This is a time to enjoy life, not for fruitless argument. Accept with good grace whatever comes to you, bitter or sweet, because your good lies in it. Step back from the crowd and attend to your own work. Do not measure yourself against pretenders, and do not share what you know with people who will misuse it.
