Ghazal 451

The sky gave you good help on the day of judgement;
let us see how you give thanks and what thank-offering you bring.

The one who fell had his hand taken by God;
say: it is for you, then, to care for those who have fallen.

In the lane of love they do not buy the pomp of kings;
confess that you are a slave and declare that you are a servant.

Cupbearer, come in at my door with the good news of pleasure,
and for one moment take the grief of the world out of my heart.

On the highway of rank and greatness there are many dangers;
it is better to cross this steep pass lightly laden.

The sultan has the thought of the army and the passion for crown and treasure;
the dervish has peace of mind and the corner of the wanderer.

May I say one word in the manner of the Sufis? With your leave:
O light of my eyes, peace is better than war and contention.

Reaching the goal depends on one's thought and resolve;
from the king, a vow of good; from grace, assistance.

Hafez, do not wash the dust of poverty and contentment from your face,
for this dust is better than the work of the alchemist.

In some matter or judgement luck was with you: give thanks by helping those who have fallen. In matters of the heart it is humility that carries the day, not grandeur. Rank and position carry danger: pass through lightly. Peace is better than conflict. Reaching what you want depends on your own thought and resolve. Do not lose your contentment, which is better than any treasure.
