Ghazal 452
Man and fairy live only by the grace of love's existence;
show some devotion, that you may win some happiness.
Strive, sir, and do not be without a share of love,
for no one buys a slave who has the fault of lacking skill.
How long the morning wine and the sweet sleep of dawn?
Strive in asking pardon at midnight and in weeping at daybreak.
What a marvel you are, O horseman of sweet ways,
that you are before my eyes and yet hidden from sight?
A thousand holy souls have burnt with jealousy at this:
that every morning and evening you are the candle of another gathering.
Who will carry from me a message to the presence of the vizier,
saying: learn two lines from me in Persian verse?
"Come, for the state of the world, as I have seen it, is such
that if you put it to the test, you will drink wine and swallow no grief."
May the cap of sovereignty never sit awry on the head of your beauty,
for you adorn fortune and are worthy of kingdom and crown.
For the scent of your tress and your face they come and go:
the east wind grinding perfume, and the rose showing itself.
Since you are not made ready for the vision, do not seek union,
for the cup of Jamshid is no use in a time of blindness.
The prayers of those who sit in corners turn calamity away;
why do you not look at us with the corner of an eye?
Come and buy sovereignty from us with the capital of beauty;
do not neglect this bargain, or you will be sorry.
The way of love is a strangely dangerous way;
God forbid that you should not find the road to a destination.
By the blessing of the resolve of Hafez there is hope that once more
I shall see myself talking the night away with my Layla under the moon.
Every happiness comes from love: work at it and do not remain without a share. Cut down on too much sleep and easy living, and turn to prayer and wakefulness at night. Before asking for union, make yourself fit to see. Do not underestimate the prayers of those who live withdrawn. The road is dangerous, but with resolve there is hope that you will reach what you love once more.
