Ghazal 453
O you who are always proud of yourself,
if you have no love, you are excused.
Do not go about among the madmen of love,
for you are famous for your prudent reason.
The drunkenness of love is not in your head;
go, for you are drunk on the juice of the grape.
A yellow face and a sigh stained with pain
are for lovers the remedy of their sickness.
Pass beyond your name and your shame, Hafez;
ask for the cup of wine, for you are languishing.
Pride and self-regard have kept you far from true love. As long as you rely too much on your reason and your reputation, you will not taste real fervour. What you take for intoxication is shallow. If you truly want it, let go of your worry about name and shame, and give your heart without reserve.
