Ghazal 456

It is early spring: strive to be glad of heart,
for many a rose will bloom again when you are in the clay.

I do not tell you with whom to sit now, or what to drink,
for you know that yourself, if you are sharp and wise.

The harp, in its own mode, gives you this same advice, but
preaching does you good only when you are fit to receive it.

In the meadow every leaf is the book of a different state;
it would be a pity for you to be unaware of what all of them are about.

Grief for the world will carry off the coin of your life for nothing,
if you are caught up night and day in this hard story.

Though the road from us to the friend is full of fear,
the going is easy if you know the halting places.

Hafez, if help comes to you from your high fortune,
you will be the prey of that beauty of pleasing form.

It is spring and life is short: try to keep your heart glad. You know yourself what is good for you: act on it. Advice helps only when you are ready to hear it. Pay attention to what is happening around you, and learn from it. Do not waste your life on grief for the world. The road looks frightening, but it becomes easy once you know the way.
