Ghazal 459
With this fine script that you draw on the rose of your cheek,
you draw a line through the page of the rose and the rose garden.
My tear, which lived secluded in the hidden chamber,
you drag from behind the seven veils out into the market.
One as slow of pace as the east wind, with the scent of your tress,
you draw into service every moment by the bond of a chain.
Every moment, in memory of that wine-red lip and drunken eye,
you draw me out of my retreat to the house of the wine seller.
You said: "Your head shall be tied to our saddle-strap."
That is easy, if you will take the trouble of the load.
Against your eye and eyebrow what plan can I make for my heart?
Alas for this bow that you draw on me, a sick man.
Come back, for it turns the evil eye away from your face,
O fresh rose who draw your skirt away from this thorn.
Hafez, what more do you ask of the bounty of the world?
You drink wine, and you draw the forelock of the beloved.
Someone's attraction has pulled you out of your quiet corner and made your secret public. You have no plan against them, and you have accepted that. They have made a promise: if they take the trouble, you are ready. What you have now is not small: happiness, and closeness to the one you love. Do not ask for more, and value this.
