Ghazal 45

In this age, the friend who is free of fault
is a flask of pure wine and a book of ghazals.

Travel alone, for the passage to safety is narrow;
take up the cup, for dear life has no substitute.

I am not the only one in the world weary of doing nothing;
the weariness of the learned, too, comes from knowledge without action.

To the eye of reason, on this troubled thoroughfare,
the world and its affairs have no permanence and no standing.

Take hold of the tress of a moon-faced one and tell no tales
that good and ill luck come from the influence of Venus and Saturn.

My heart had great hope of union with your face,
but on the road of life death is the highwayman of hope.

In no age will they find him sober,
so drunk is our Hafez on the wine of eternity.

In these days do not trust just anyone, and choose your companions carefully. Life is precious: do not spend it in inaction and idle thought, and put what you know into practice. Do not hand your fate over to luck and the stars. Time is short, so act now on what you want.
