Ghazal 464

The affair of your beauty, like my love, has reached perfection;
be glad, for neither of these two will ever decline.

It cannot be imagined that, in the conception of reason,
there should in any sense appear a likeness fairer than this.

The portion of life would be gained, if with you
there were ever, one day in our life, a union granted to us.

The moment I am with you, a year is a single day;
the moment I am without you, an instant is a year.

How, dear soul, should I see the image of your face in sleep,
when of sleep itself my eye sees nothing but an image?

Have mercy on my heart, for with love of your fair face
my frail body has grown as thin as the crescent moon.

Hafez, do not complain: if you want union with the friend,
you must bear more than this of separation.

Your love has reached its fullness and is lasting: be glad of that. One day with them is worth a whole lifetime to you. Separation has taken your sleep and your strength: ask them to have mercy on your state. Even so, do not complain: reaching them requires still more patience.
