Ghazal 467
Of that wine of love by which every raw one is ripened,
though it is the month of Ramadan, bring a cup.
Days have gone by in which my poor hand has not held
the tress of one of boxwood stature, the forearm of one of silver body.
Although the fast is a dear guest, O heart,
count its company a gift, and its going a favour.
The clever bird does not fly to the door of the dervish lodge now,
for at every gathering for preaching a snare has been set.
I make no complaint of the ill-tempered ascetic; the custom is
that when a morning breaks, an evening comes after it.
When my friend goes strolling to look at the meadow,
carry him a message from me, O messenger east wind.
That companion who drinks clear wine night and day:
will he ever remember one who drinks the dregs?
Hafez, if the vizier of the age does not do justice to your heart,
you will hardly win your desire by your own will.
You are passing through a time of restraint and hardship: honour it, and count its ending a blessing too. For some time you have been far from what your heart wants. Keep away from gatherings in which snares are laid. Do not complain of other people's ill temper: this too will pass. What you want will not be won by wilfulness: it needs the help of someone capable.
