Ghazal 469
The scents of the bay tree of the sanctuary have come, and my passion has grown;
may my dear life be the ransom of the dust of the friend's door.
To hear a message from the friend is happiness and well-being;
who will carry my greeting from me to Suad?
Come to the evening of strangers and see the water of my eyes,
like clear wine in a Syrian glass.
If a bird of good omen sings from the place of the arak trees,
do not keep the moaning of my dove apart from its gardens.
Not much remains before the day of separation from the friend is over;
from the hills of the sanctuary I have seen the domes of the tents.
Happy the moment when you come in and I say to you in welcome:
"You have come a blessed coming; you have alighted in the best of places."
I have been far from you and have wasted away like the crescent,
although I have not seen your moon-like face in its fullness.
Even if I were called to paradise and broke the covenant,
my soul would not be glad nor would my sleep be sweet.
There is hope that by good fortune I shall see you soon,
you made glad in command, and I in service.
Your fine verse, Hafez, is like a string of lustrous pearls,
which in its grace takes the prize from the verse of Nizami.
Signs have come that the one you love is drawing near, and the days of separation are ending. Prepare to welcome them. Absence has worn you down, but you have kept your covenant and no other happiness can take its place. Have hope in good fortune: the meeting is near, and each of you will be glad in your own place.
