Ghazal 470

My breast is brimful of pain: alas, for a salve!
My heart is at its last breath from loneliness: for God's sake, a companion!

Who can expect ease from the swift-moving sphere?
Cupbearer, give me a cup, that I may rest for a moment.

I said to a shrewd man: "Look at this state of things." He laughed and said:
"A hard day, a strange business, a distracted world."

I have burnt in the well of patience for that candle of Chigil;
the king of the Turks cares nothing for our state: where is a Rustam?

On the path of love, safety and ease are an affliction;
may the heart be wounded that, with your pain, wants a salve.

Those who love comfort and delicacy have no road into the lane of the rends;
a traveller is needed who would burn the world, not a raw man without grief.

A true human being is not to be found in this world of earth;
another world must be made, and a human being made anew.

Rise, let us give our hearts to that Turk of Samarkand,
from whose breeze the scent of the river Muliyan comes.

What does the weeping of Hafez weigh before the self-sufficiency of love?
For in this sea, the seven seas appear as a drop of dew.

Your heart is full of pain and loneliness, and you want a companion. Do not expect ease from fortune: take a moment's rest. The times are troubled and few come to anyone's aid. On this road a love of comfort is no use: one must be equal to the journey. If you find no one of like heart, remake yourself. Your sorrow is small beside the greatness of what you seek.
