Ghazal 476

Breeze of the morning of good fortune, by the sign that you know,
pass through the lane of a certain one, at the time that you know.

You are the messenger of the secret retreat, and my eyes are on your road;
go out of kindness, not by command, in the way that you know.

Say: my dear life has slipped from my hand; for God's sake,
grant from your life-giving ruby lip that which you know.

I wrote these letters in such a way that no stranger understood;
do you too, out of generosity, read them in the way that you know.

The thought of your sword is to us the story of the thirsty man and water;
you have taken your captive: kill him in the way that you know.

How am I to fasten my hope to your gold-embroidered belt?
There is a fine point, my beauty, about that waist, which you know.

Turkish and Arabic are one in this business, Hafez;
tell the tale of love in whatever tongue you know.

There is a secret between you and someone that only the two of you know: send your message discreetly, through a trusted go-between. They understand even what you have not written. The matter is in their hands and you have yielded to their will. Do not count too much on a clear result, since there is a delicate point involved. Express your love in whatever language you can.
