Ghazal 479
It is morning, and the dew drips from the winter cloud;
make ready for the morning draught and hand me a cup of a full measure.
I have fallen into the sea of "we" and "I"; bring
wine, that it may set me free from "we" and "I".
Drink the blood of the cup, for its blood is lawful;
be about the business of the friend, for that is a work worth doing.
Cupbearer, stay close at hand, for grief lies in wait for us;
minstrel, keep to this same mode that you are playing.
Give wine, for the harp brought its head close to my ear and said:
"Live gladly, and listen to this bent old man."
Cupbearer, by the freedom from need of the rends, give wine,
so that you may hear in the singer's voice: "He is the One who needs nothing."
A new day has begun: start it with a glad heart. You have become caught up in "I" and "we": free yourself from self-regard. Give yourself to work that benefits the one you love. Grief lies in wait, so keep gladness and friends close to you. Listen to the advice of the old, and live free of need.
