Ghazal 481
Hear this point, and you will free yourself from grief:
you will swallow blood if you seek a livelihood that was not allotted.
In the end you will become the clay of the potters;
for now, think of the jug, and of filling it with wine.
If you are one of those human beings who long for paradise,
take your pleasure with a few human beings of fairy birth.
One cannot lean back on the seat of the great for nothing,
unless you make ready all the means of greatness.
There will be rewards for you, O Khosrow of the sweet-mouthed,
if you cast one glance towards Farhad, whose heart has fallen.
When will your mind take the imprint of grace? Never,
unless you wipe the page clean of its scattered pictures.
If you leave your affairs to generosity, Hafez,
how much pleasure you will have with the fortune God gives.
O east wind, do service to Khwaja Jalal al-Din,
so that you may fill the world with jasmine and free lily.
Do not demand by force what is not your portion: it yields nothing but pain. Life is short, so take hold of the present. A high position is not gained without preparing the merits it requires. Clear your heart of scattered thoughts so that grace may settle in it. Leave your affairs to God's generosity: God-given fortune will bring you to happiness.
