Ghazal 482

O heart, you do not pass through the lane of love;
you have all the means gathered, and you do nothing.

The polo stick of command is in your hand, and you strike no ball;
the falcon of victory is on your wrist, and you take no prey.

This blood that surges in waves within you,
you do not spend on the colour and scent of a beloved.

The breath of your nature has not turned to musk, because
you do not pass, like the east wind, over the dust of the friend's lane.

I fear you will not carry off a sleeveful of roses from this meadow,
since you will not bear a single thorn from its rose garden.

A hundred pods of musk are folded in the sleeve of your soul,
and you do not offer them up for the forelock of a friend.

You throw to the ground a fine and charming cup, and the wine,
and give no thought to the misery of the morning after.

Go, Hafez, for the service of the king of the age:
though all others perform it, you for one do not.

You have all the tools and abilities and yet you do not set to work. Opportunity and success are within reach and you are making no use of them. Until you put up with a small hardship you will not get a result. You have kept your gifts hidden: put them to use. Do not waste what you have, and think of the consequences. Now is the time to act.
