Ghazal 483

At dawn, a wayfarer in a certain land
was putting this riddle to a companion:

"O Sufi, wine becomes clear only
when it has passed forty days in the flask.

God is a hundred times disgusted with the cloak
that has a hundred idols in its sleeve.

Though generosity is a name with nothing left behind it,
present your need to one of the fair.

You will have a reward, O owner of the harvest,
if you show mercy to one who gleans.

I do not see the gladness of pleasure in anyone,
neither a cure for a heart nor a pain for the faith.

Hearts have grown dark within; perhaps, out of the unseen,
some recluse will raise a lamp.

If the finger of Solomon is not there,
what virtue is there in the engraving on a seal?

Though it is the way of the beautiful to be sharp of temper,
what would it matter if one of them bore with a sorrowful man?

Show me the road to the tavern, that I may ask
one who sees ahead about my own end.

Hafez has neither presence of mind for the lesson nor solitude,
and the man of learning has no knowledge that is certain."

Everything needs time to ripen: be patient. Put hypocrisy aside. Share your need with someone who is kind, and if you have means yourself, help those in need. The times are dark and few people are glad at heart, yet there is hope of an opening from the unseen. Ask someone knowledgeable and experienced about how your affair will end.
