Ghazal 485
Cupbearer, here are the shade of a cloud, the spring and the bank of a stream;
I do not say what to do: if you are a person of heart, say it yourself.
No scent of sincerity comes from this pattern; rise,
and wash the stained cloak of the Sufi in pure wine.
The world is base of nature: do not lean on its generosity;
you who have seen the world, do not look for steadiness from the base.
I will give you two pieces of advice: listen, and carry off a hundred treasures.
"Come in by the door of pleasure, and do not run on the road of fault-finding."
In thanks that you have reached the spring once again,
plant the root of goodness and seek the road of true knowledge.
If you seek the face of the beloved, make the mirror fit for it;
otherwise rose and eglantine will never grow from iron and brass.
Open your ears, for the nightingale is crying out:
"Sir, do not fall short: breathe the scent of the rose of grace."
You said: "There is a smell of hypocrisy about our Hafez."
Praise be to your breath, for you have caught the scent well.
Everything is ready for happiness, and you know yourself what should be done. Do not rely on the world's generosity. Act on two pieces of advice: live gladly, and do not look for faults in others. In thanks for a second chance, do good and seek understanding. If you want to see the friend, first make your own heart fit. If someone points out your fault, accept it.
