Ghazal 491: I have fixed in my eye the eyebrow of one with a face like the moon

I have fixed in my eye the eyebrow of one with a face like the moon;
I have painted somewhere the image of one with fresh down on the cheek.

There is hope that the charter of my life as a lover
will receive its royal cipher from that small bow of an eyebrow.

My head has gone from my hands and my eyes have burnt with waiting,
in longing for the head and eyes of one who graces the gathering.

My heart is clouded: I will set fire to the cloak;
come and look, for it is a sight worth seeing.

On the day of my death make my coffin of cypress wood,
for I go bearing the brand of one of tall stature.

I, a dervish, have given the reins of my heart to one
who cares nothing for anyone with crown and throne.

In the place where the beautiful strike with the sword of a glance,
do not wonder at a head fallen at someone's feet.

I, who have a moon in my night chamber from his face,
how should I care for the light of a star?

What are separation and union? Seek what pleases the friend,
for it is a pity to ask of him anything other than himself.

The fish will bring up pearls in their longing, to scatter them,
if the ship of Hafez's verse should reach a sea.

Interpretation of the fal

You have given your heart to someone and hope that this love will be accepted and made firm: your hope is not misplaced. The long wait has worn you out. The one you love cares nothing for rank and wealth: approach them with simplicity. Instead of thinking about distance and nearness, seek what pleases them. Your skill and your words will be valued if they reach the right place.
