Ghazal 495
"Ask for wine and scatter roses: what do you seek from time?"
So said the rose at daybreak. Nightingale, what do you say?
Carry your seat to the rose garden, so that with beauty and cupbearer
you may take the lip and kiss the cheek, drink wine and smell the rose.
Set your boxwood figure swaying and make for the rose garden,
so that the cypress may learn from your stature how to win hearts.
To whom will your laughing bud bring good fortune?
O graceful branch of roses, for whose sake do you grow?
Today, while your market is thronged with buyers,
seize the moment and lay up a treasure from the capital of goodness.
Beauty, like a candle, stands in the path of the wind;
draw some profit of worth from the candle of beauty.
That forelock, every curl of which is worth a hundred pods of Chinese musk:
how good it would be if it had a scent of good nature.
Every bird has come to the king's rose garden with its own song:
the nightingale with the making of melodies, Hafez with the saying of ghazals.
It is a time for gladness and for enjoying life: what more do you ask of fortune? Now that your market is busy and you are in demand, seize the chance and build yourself a store through goodness. Beauty and youth are like a candle in the wind: alongside them, gather skill and good character. Everyone has a gift: offer yours as well.
