Ghazal 4
Morning breeze, tell that graceful gazelle with kindness:
it is you who sent us wandering to mountain and desert.
The sugar seller, long may he live, why
does he never ask after the sugar-loving parrot?
Did the pride of your beauty forbid you, O rose,
to ask once after the love-mad nightingale?
With good nature and kindness one can capture people of insight;
the wise bird is not taken with snare and trap.
I do not know why there is no trace of friendship
in those tall, dark-eyed, moon-faced ones.
When you sit with the beloved and measure out the wine,
remember the lovers who measure only wind.
No fault can be named in your beauty but this:
a lovely face has no habit of love and loyalty.
No wonder if in heaven, at the words of Hafez,
the song of Venus sets the Messiah dancing.
You are hurt by the indifference of someone you care for and are waiting for a sign from them. Complaint and pressure will not work; kindness and good temper are what win hearts. Send your message gently and be patient. Your words will have their effect.
