Ghazal 51

A well-watered ruby that thirsts for blood is my beloved's lip,
and to give my life for a sight of her is my work.

Let him be shamed by that black eye and those long lashes,
whoever has seen her steal hearts and still denies me.

Camel driver, do not carry the baggage to the city gate, for that street's end
is a high road that is the dwelling of my heart's keeper.

I am the servant of my own star, for in this famine of faithfulness
the love of that drunken gypsy is my buyer.

The casket of rose perfume and her amber-scattering tress
are a favour of one whiff of my perfumer's sweet scent.

Gardener, do not drive me from your door like the breeze,
for the water of your rose bed comes from my pomegranate-red tears.

A draught of sugar and rosewater from my beloved's lip was prescribed
by her narcissus eye, which is the physician of my sick heart.

The one who taught Hafez fine points in the style of the ghazal
is my sweet-spoken friend of rare speech.

Your heart is wholly pledged to someone and you would give up everything for them. Luck is with you, because in a time short on loyalty you have been given a real affection. Do not move away from the place your heart is tied to. The cure for your heart is with that person, and your gifts owe much to them.
