Ghazal 52

For a long time now, passion for the beautiful has been my religion;
the grief of this affair is the joy of my grieving heart.

To see your face one needs an eye that sees the soul;
how is that within the rank of my world-seeing eye?

Be my friend, for the ornament of the sky and the adornment of the age
come from the moon of your face and my Pleiades-like tears.

Since love for you taught me how to speak,
praise and applause of me are on everyone's tongue.

O God, grant me the fortune of poverty,
for this grace is the cause of my dignity and standing.

Tell the preacher who knows the police chief not to sell such grandeur,
for the lodging place of the sultan is my poor heart.

Lord, whose place of spectacle is this Kaaba of the goal,
whose thorns on the way are rose and wild rose to me?

Hafez, tell no more tales of the splendour of Parviz,
for his lip drinks the dregs of my sweet Khosrow.

You gave your heart to a love long ago, and even its sorrow is sweet to you. That love has loosened your tongue and made you well thought of. Take pride in needing little, not in other people's rank. The hardships of the road ahead look easy to you; go forward with that same eagerness.
