Ghazal 61
Morning breeze, if your way should take you to the friend's land,
bring a breath from the friend's ambered tresses.
By his life, I will scatter my own life in thanks
if you bring me a message from the friend's side.
And if it happens that you gain no admission to that presence,
bring for my eyes a little dust from the friend's door.
I, a beggar, and the wish for union with him: far from it!
Unless in sleep I see the image of the friend's face.
My pine-cone heart trembles like the willow
with longing for the friend's pine-like stature and form.
Though the friend would not buy us for anything,
we would not sell one hair of the friend's head for a world.
What would it matter if his heart were freed from the bond of grief,
since poor Hafez is the slave and servant of the friend?
You are waiting for a message from someone far away, and even the smallest sign from them would make you happy. Reaching them seems hard, but value this attachment and do not trade it for anything. Your humility and loyalty will, in the end, release your heart from its grief.
