Ghazal 66

Lament, nightingale, if you mean to be my friend,
for we are two wretched lovers and our work is lamenting.

In that land where a breeze blows from the friend's tress,
what place is there for the musk pods of Tartary to boast?

Bring wine, that we may dye the robe of hypocrisy,
for we are drunk on the cup of pride and call it sobriety.

To cook the fancy of your tress is not the work of every raw one,
for to go under the chain is the way of the bold.

It is a hidden subtlety from which love arises,
and its name is not ruby lip or the green line of down.

A person's beauty is not eye and tress and cheek and mole;
there are a thousand fine points in this business of winning hearts.

The true qalandars would not buy for half a barleycorn
the satin robe of one who is bare of skill.

It is hard to reach your threshold; yes,
the ascent to the heaven of lordship is made with difficulty.

At dawn I was seeing the glance of your eye in a dream;
how fine a degree of sleep, that is better than waking!

Do not hurt his heart with lamenting; make an end, Hafez,
for lasting salvation lies in doing little harm.

What you want is not easy to reach; it calls for courage and maturity. Real beauty and worth are not in appearances: look for skill and good character, and cultivate the same in yourself. Let go of pride and pretence. Do not wear anyone down with complaints and insistence, for the way to lasting good is to cause as little hurt as possible.
