Ghazal 67
Lord, from whose house is this heart-brightening candle?
Our soul is burned; ask whose beloved she is.
For now she is the wrecker of my heart and faith;
in whose arms does she sleep, and whose house does she share?
The ruby wine of her lip, may it never be far from my lip,
whose spirit's wine is it, and who is pledged its cup?
The fortune of the company of that candle of happy light,
ask, for God's sake, to whose moth it is given.
Everyone casts a spell for her, and it is not known
toward whose tale her tender heart inclines.
Lord, that royal one, moon-faced, with a brow like Venus,
whose matchless pearl is she, whose single jewel?
I said: alas for the mad heart of Hafez without you.
Laughing under her breath she said: mad for whom?
You have given your heart to someone who has many admirers, and you do not know where their own heart lies; this uncertainty is robbing you of peace. Do not torment yourself with guesses and jealousy. Tell them plainly how you feel: their answer, whatever it is, will bring you out of this confusion.
