Ghazal 70
The pupil of our eye looks at nothing but your face;
our bewildered heart remembers no one but you.
My tears put on the pilgrim's robe to circle your sanctuary,
though with the blood of my wounded heart they are never pure for a moment.
Let it be bound in snare and cage like a wild bird,
the bird of the Lote Tree, if it does not fly in search of you.
If the penniless lover has scattered the false coin of his heart,
do not blame him, for he has no power over ready money.
In the end his hand will reach that tall cypress,
whoever's resolve does not fall short in seeking you.
I will never speak of the life-giving of Jesus,
for he is not as skilled as your lip in adding to the spirit.
I who do not heave a sigh in the fire of longing for you,
how can it be said that my heart is not patient under the brand?
The first day that I saw the tip of your tress, I said
that the tangle of this chain has no end.
The wish for union with you is not in Hafez's heart alone;
who is there whose mind does not hold the wish for union with you?
All your thought and attention are fixed on one goal and you see nothing else. Though your hands are empty, you have sincerely offered what you have, and that is accepted. If your determination does not weaken, you will reach it in the end. The road is long and calls for patience, and you have that patience.
