Ghazal 76

Apart from your threshold I have no refuge in the world;
my head has no place to turn but this door.

When the enemy draws his sword, I throw down my shield,
for our sword is nothing but a moan and a sigh.

Why should I turn my face from the street of the tavern?
There is no better custom or way than this in the world.

If time sets fire to the harvest of my life,
say: burn, for to me it is not worth a blade of straw.

I am the slave of the wanton narcissus eye of that tall cypress,
who from the wine of pride has no glance for anyone.

Do not set out to do harm, and do whatever you wish,
for in our law there is no sin other than this.

Ride with a tight rein, O king of the realm of beauty,
for there is no roadside without someone seeking justice.

Since I see snares on the road from every side,
I have no better refuge than the protection of her tress.

Do not give the treasury of Hafez's heart to tress and mole,
for such work is not within the reach of every dark one.

You have one real refuge, and it is best to rely on it. Do not fight back against hostility: prayer and patience are your weapons. Do not fear worldly loss. Keep your rule simple: harm no one, and otherwise be free. There are many snares on the road, so do not give your heart away easily.
