Ghazal 81

At dawn the bird of the meadow said to the newly risen rose:
be less proud, for in this garden many like you have bloomed.

The rose laughed: we are not hurt by the truth, but
no lover ever spoke a harsh word to the beloved.

If you hope for ruby wine from that jewelled cup,
many a pearl you must pierce with the tip of your eyelashes.

Never to all eternity will the scent of love reach him
who has not swept the dust of the tavern door with his cheek.

In the garden of Iram last night, when in the soft air
the hyacinth's tress was ruffled by the breeze of dawn,

I said: O throne of Jamshid, where is your world-seeing cup?
It said: alas, that wakeful fortune has gone to sleep.

The speech of love is not what comes to the tongue;
cupbearer, give wine and cut short this talking and hearing.

The tears of Hafez have thrown reason and patience into the sea;
what can he do? He could not hide the burning of love's grief.

Speak gently to the one you love, even when you are in the right: a harsh word closes the road. Reaching your goal will cost many tears and cannot be done without humility. Splendour does not last, so do not pride yourself on it. Show love by what you do, not by much talk.
