Ghazal 83
If a fault came from the hand of your musky tress, it is past;
if a cruelty came to us from your dark mole, it is past.
If the lightning of love burned a wool-wearer's harvest, it is burned;
if the tyranny of a fortunate king fell on a beggar, it is past.
On the path there is no taking of offence; bring wine.
Every cloudiness you see, once clarity came, is past.
The game of love needs endurance, O heart; stand firm.
If there was a sorrow, there was; if there was a fault, it is past.
If a glance of the heart's keeper carried off a heart, it is carried off;
if something passed between the soul and the beloved, it is past.
From tale-bearers came vexations, but
if an unfit word passed between companions, it is past.
Tell the preacher not to blame Hafez for leaving the dervish lodge;
why tie the foot of the free? If he went somewhere, he went.
Whatever hurt or fault has come between you and another person is in the past; let it go. Do not hold a grudge or bring up old matters. Friendship takes forbearance. Do not listen to gossips, who are the source of the ill feeling. With forgiveness and a clear heart, peace will be restored.
