Ghazal 85

We did not taste one draught from her ruby lip, and she is gone;
we did not look our fill on her moon-like face, and she is gone.

It seems she had grown very weary of our company;
she packed her load, we could not catch her dust, and she is gone.

How often we recited the Opening and the Yemeni charm,
and breathed the chapter of Sincerity after her, and she is gone.

They flattered us that she would pass our way;
you saw in the end how we bought that flattery, and she is gone.

She went strolling in the meadow of beauty and grace, but
we did not stroll in the rose garden of union with her, and she is gone.

Like Hafez, all night we moaned and wept:
alas, we did not arrive for her farewell, and she is gone.

An opportunity, or someone dear, slipped away before you could enjoy it, and regret is left behind. You trusted in promises, and prayer and waiting alone did not help. Do not keep grieving over what has gone. From now on, seize each chance quickly and say what is in your heart while there is still time.
