Ghazal 89
Lord, find a way for my beloved to come back in safety
and free me from the bonds of blame.
Bring the dust of the road of that beloved who has travelled,
that I may make my world-seeing eye its dwelling place.
Help! From six directions they have closed my road:
that mole, that down, that tress, that face, that cheek, that stature.
Today, while I am in your hands, show some mercy;
tomorrow, when I am dust, what use are tears of regret?
You who talk of love with exposition and explanation,
we have nothing to say to you; go in peace.
Dervish, do not complain of the sword of the friends,
for this tribe takes blood money from the one they have slain.
Set fire to the cloak, for the curve of the cupbearer's eyebrow
breaks down the corner of the prayer leader's niche.
God forbid that I should complain of your cruelty and harshness;
the injustice of the gentle is all kindness and generosity.
Hafez will not cut short the talk of the tip of your tress;
this chain has been joined on until the day of resurrection.
You are waiting for someone dear to return and praying for their safety; there is hope that they will. Your heart is held from every side and has no way out. Ask them to be kind while there is still time. Do not complain of the hardships that come from a friend, and show love in deeds, not in talk.
