Ghazal 8
Rise, cupbearer, and pass the cup;
throw dust on the head of the grief of days.
Set the wine cup in my hand, that from my shoulders
I may pull off this blue-coloured patched cloak.
Though it is ill repute in the eyes of the wise,
we want neither name nor honour.
Pour the wine; how long this wind of pride?
Dust on the head of the self that comes to no good!
The smoke of the sigh of my grieving breast
has burned these raw and frozen ones.
A confidant for the secret of my frenzied heart
I see in no one, high or low.
My mind is happy with a heart's comforter
who at one stroke took comfort from my heart.
He looks no more at the cypress in the meadow,
whoever has seen that silver-limbed cypress.
Be patient, Hafez, in hardship, day and night;
in the end, one day, you will gain your desire.
Put down the grief of these days and let go of pride and keeping up appearances. You feel you have no one to confide in and your heart is restless, but do not worry about what people say. The present hardship will pass. Be patient day and night; in the end you will have what you wish for.
