Ghazal 94

Of that heart-soothing friend I have thanks mixed with complaint;
if you understand the fine points of love, hear this tale.

Every service I did was without wage or thanks;
Lord, let no one have a master without kindness.

No one gives water to the thirsty-lipped rends;
it seems those who know the friends of God have left this land.

Do not twist yourself in her lasso-like tress, O heart, for there
you will see heads cut off without crime or offence.

Your eye drank our blood with a glance, and you approve;
my dear, it is not right to protect one who sheds blood.

In this black night I have lost the road to my goal;
come out from some corner, O star of guidance.

Whichever way I went, nothing increased but my dread;
beware of this desert and this road without end.

O sun of the beautiful, I am seething within;
take me for one hour into the shade of your care.

How can one picture an end to this road,
which has more than a hundred thousand stages at its beginning?

Though you have taken my honour, I will not turn my face from your door;
cruelty from the beloved is better than regard from the pretender.

Love will come to your aid, even if, like Hafez,
you recite the Quran by heart in fourteen readings.

Your service and effort have gone unappreciated, and it grieves you. You have lost the road in the dark and are looking for a guide; ask God for direction. The way is long and haste will not help. Do not turn from the door your heart is fixed on. What will rescue you is love and sincerity, not learning or claims.
