Ghazal 98

If in your creed the blood of the lover is lawful,
our whole good is whatever is good in your eyes.

The blackness of your dark tress is the Maker of darkness;
the whiteness of your moon-like face is the Cleaver of dawn.

No one has found release from the curl of your lasso tress,
nor success against that small bow of an eyebrow and the arrow of your eye.

From my eyes a spring has started flowing at my side,
in whose midst no sailor could swim.

Your lip, like the water of life, is the food of the soul;
our body of dust has from it the taste of wine.

Your ruby lip gave one kiss after a hundred pleas;
my heart took its desire from it after a hundred thousand entreaties.

Prayer for your life is the litany on the tongues of the longing,
for as long as evening and morning are joined.

Do not look to us for right conduct, repentance and piety, Hafez;
no one ever found right conduct in a rend, a lover, a madman.

You have handed yourself over entirely to the wishes of the one you love. You cannot get free of this attachment, and only with great persistence and patience have you gained a little of what you want. Go on praying for them. Do not expect cool-headed prudence of yourself: your heart has taken this road.
