Ghazal 9

The garden has again the bloom of the days of youth;
news of the rose reaches the sweet-voiced nightingale.

Morning breeze, if you come again to the young ones of the meadow,
carry our respects to cypress, rose and basil.

If the wine seller's young Magian shines like this,
I will make my eyelashes the sweeper of the tavern door.

You who draw a polo stick of pure ambergris across the moon,
do not make me, who am already dizzy, more distressed.

I fear these people who laugh at the drinkers of dregs
will in the end lose their faith over the business of the tavern.

Be a friend of the men of God, for in Noah's ark
there is a dust that would not buy the flood for a drop of water.

Go out of the house of the turning sky and ask no bread of it,
for that black-bowled miser kills its guest in the end.

For one whose last bed is a handful of dust,
say: what need to raise a palace to the skies?

My moon of Canaan, the throne of Egypt is yours;
it is time to bid the prison farewell.

Hafez, drink wine, live as a rend and be glad, but
do not, like others, make the Quran a snare of deceit.

A fresh season is beginning and good news is on its way. A period of confinement is ending and a better position awaits you. Do not tie your heart to worldly gain or expect generosity from fortune; keep company with good people. Enjoy life, but stay clear of hypocrisy and of deceiving others.
