Ghazal 211: Last night he was coming, and his cheek was aflame

Last night he was coming, and his cheek was aflame;
where had he once again burnt some grief-stricken heart?

The custom of slaying lovers and the manner of throwing a city into turmoil
were a garment that had been cut to his stature.

He counted the souls of lovers as wild rue for his own face,
and for that purpose he had kindled the fire of his cheek.

Though he was saying "I will kill you miserably", I could see
that in secret he had a glance for me, whose heart is burnt.

The unbelief of his tress was waylaying the faith, and that stony-hearted one
had lit a torch from his face to light its way.

The heart gathered much blood, but the eye poured it out;
God, O God, who was it that wasted, and who had saved?

Do not sell the friend for the world, for he gained little
who had sold Joseph for base gold.

He said, and said it well: "Go and burn your cloak, Hafez."
O Lord, from whom had he learned this skill at telling false coin?

Interpretation of the fal

The one who has taken your heart seems harsh and indifferent on the surface, but secretly has an eye on you. Do not sell a true friend or a true bond for any worldly gain, for it will bring regret. Do not easily waste what you gathered with effort. Give up keeping up appearances: that person knows well what is inside you.
