Ghazal 271: I have such complaints about his black tress: do not ask.

I have such complaints about his black tress: do not ask.
Because of it I have been left so without order or home: do not ask.

Let no one give up heart and faith in the hope of faithfulness,
for I am so sorry to have done it: do not ask.

For a single draught that brings no harm to anyone after it,
I suffer such trouble from ignorant people: do not ask.

Ascetic, pass us by in safety, for this ruby wine
carries off heart and faith in such a way: do not ask.

There are arguments on this road that melt the soul;
everyone has a quarrel: "Do not look at this", "Do not ask about that."

My wish was for piety and a safe life, but
that beguiling narcissus has such a way with it: do not ask.

I said I would ask the ball of the sky how matters stand;
it said: "What I endure in the curve of the polo stick: do not ask."

I said to him: "Whose blood did you curl your tress in?" He said:
"Hafez, that is a long story; by the Quran, do not ask."

Interpretation of the fal

You are distressed by your attachment and regret it, and you have paid a heavy price for it. Do not give up everything you have in the hope of other people's loyalty. Others talk a great deal about your affairs and trouble you: do not answer them. The quiet life you wanted does not go with this attachment. Everyone in this world is caught up in something; ask and probe no further.
