Ghazal 28: By the master's life, by old right and true covenant

By the master's life, by old right and true covenant,
the companion of my breath at dawn is a prayer for your fortune.

My tears, which outdid Noah's flood,
could not wash the image of your love from the tablet of my breast.

Strike a bargain and buy this broken heart,
for broken as it is, it is worth a hundred thousand whole ones.

The ant's tongue grew long against Asaf, and rightly,
for the master lost Jamshid's seal and did not look for it.

O heart, do not give up hope of the friend's boundless grace;
since you boasted of love, stake your head, quick and nimble.

Strive for truthfulness, that the sun may be born of your breath,
for the first dawn was blackened in the face by its lie.

Through you I became a madman of mountain and plain, and still
you do not, out of pity, loosen the belt of my chain.

Do not be hurt, Hafez, and do not look to heart-stealers for protection;
what fault is it of the garden if this plant did not grow?

Interpretation of the fal

Your loyalty and good wishes toward someone you love remain firm, though they do not value them as they should. Do not give up hope of grace, and go forward on your chosen path honestly and without hesitation: truthfulness is what brings light. If the answer you want does not come, do not take it to heart or blame yourself.
