Ghazal 2: Where is right conduct, and where am I, the ruined one?
Where is right conduct, and where am I, the ruined one?
See how far the road is, from where to where.
My heart is weary of the cloister and the cloak of hypocrisy;
where is the Magian temple, and where the pure wine?
What has piety and virtue to do with the life of a rend?
Where is the hearing of sermons, and where the song of the rebab?
What can the hearts of enemies grasp of the friend's face?
Where is the dead lamp, and where the candle of the sun?
Since the dust of your threshold is the kohl of our sight,
tell us, where shall we go from this court, where?
Do not gaze at the dimple of that chin, for a pit lies on the road;
where are you going, O heart, in such haste, where?
It is gone! May the days of union be sweetly remembered;
where did that glance go, and where that reproach?
Do not expect rest and sleep from Hafez, O friend;
what is rest, which patience, and where is sleep?
Interpretation of the fal
You feel a gap between who you are and what is expected of you, and you are tired of pretence. Be honest with yourself and choose the path your heart agrees with. Do not rush: something attractive on this road may hide a pitfall. Stop grieving over what has passed and go forward patiently.
