Ghazal 357: In the tavern of the Magians I see the light of God

In the tavern of the Magians I see the light of God;
see this wonder: what a light it is, and from what a place I see it!

Do not parade yourself before me, O leader of the pilgrims, for you
see the house, and I see the Lord of the house.

I want to open the musk-pods of the idols' tresses;
it is a far-fetched thought, and surely what I see is a mistake.

The burning of the heart, the flowing tears, the sigh at dawn, the lament at night:
all this I see as coming from the glance of your kindness.

At every moment the highwayman of fancy draws a picture of your face;
to whom shall I tell what things I see behind this veil?

No one has ever seen from the musk of Khotan or the musk-pod of China
what I see every dawn from the east wind.

Friends, do not blame Hafez for the play of glances,
for I see him as one of those who love you.

Interpretation of the fal

You have found truth and light in a place where others do not expect it. Do not be taken in by outward form, name and title: what matters is the inner reality. All your burning and tears come from that one's kindness, not from coldness. What you see in your heart cannot be told, so do not share it with everyone. Your intention is pure and deserves no blame.
