Ghazal 368: Rise, so that we may seek an opening at the door of the tavern

Rise, so that we may seek an opening at the door of the tavern,
sit on the road of the friend, and seek what we desire.

We have no provisions for the road to the sanctuary of union, unless
by begging we seek some provision at the door of the wine house.

Although our stained tears are flowing, yet
to carry our message to him we seek someone pure of nature.

May the sweetness of the brand of grief for you be forbidden to our heart
if we seek redress for the tyranny of the grief of loving you.

The point of your mole cannot be drawn upon the tablet of sight,
unless we seek the ink from the pupil of the eye.

The heart asked, at the price of its life, for one sweet word from your lip;
with a sugared smile your lip said: "We are seeking a higher bid."

So that the passion-struck heart may have a recipe for perfume,
we seek its ink from the musk-scented down of your cheek.

Since grief for you can be found nowhere but in a glad heart,
in the hope of grief for you we seek a mind that is glad.

How long will you sit at the door of the college, Hafez?
Rise, so that we may seek an opening at the door of the tavern.

Interpretation of the fal

It is time to rise from your usual place and look for an opening elsewhere, where the heart is at work and not study and debate. You have no provisions for this road and must ask for them humbly. Do not complain of the pain of this love. What you want costs more than what you have offered. Keep your heart glad.
