Ghazal 39: What need has my garden of cypress and pine?

What need has my garden of cypress and pine?
Is our home-grown box tree less than anyone?

O delicate youth, what creed have you taken up,
that our blood is more lawful to you than mother's milk?

When you see the shape of sorrow from afar, call for wine;
we have made the diagnosis and the cure is settled.

Why should we draw our head back from the threshold of the Magian elder?
Fortune is in that house and relief is at that door.

The grief of love is no more than one story, and the wonder is
that from every tongue I hear it, it is never repeated.

Yesterday he promised me union, and had wine in his head;
let us see what he says today and what is in his head again.

Shiraz, the water of Rokni and this sweet-scented wind:
do not fault it, for it is the beauty spot on the cheek of the seven climes.

There is a difference between Khizr's water, whose place is the darkness,
and our water, whose source is Allahu Akbar.

We do not sell off the honour of poverty and contentment;
tell the king that daily bread is apportioned.

Hafez, what a rare branch of sugar candy your pen is,
whose fruit is more pleasing than honey and sugar.

Interpretation of the fal

What you have is no less than what others have; value it, and value the place where you are. Do not turn away from the support you have relied on so far, because relief will come from that same door. Do not trust unstable promises, and do not humble yourself before anyone for a living: your portion is assured.
