Ghazal 425: He was passing by, trailing his skirt, in fine linen worked with gold

He was passing by, trailing his skirt, in fine linen worked with gold;
a hundred moon-faced ones, out of envy, had torn the collars of their own linen.

From the heat of the fire of wine, the sweat around his cheek
was like drops of dew fallen on a rose petal.

Speech fluent and sweet, a stature tall and nimble,
a face delicate and beautiful, an eye finely drawn.

His life-giving ruby was born of the water of grace;
his gracefully moving boxwood was reared in delicacy.

Look at that charming ruby of his, and that laugh which unsettles the heart;
look at that pleasant gait of his, and that quiet step.

That black-eyed gazelle has slipped out of our snare;
friends, what remedy shall I find for this startled heart?

Take care, as far as you can, not to hurt those who have insight;
the world keeps no faith, O light of both my eyes.

How long must I bear reproach from your heart-deceiving eye?
One day give me a glance, O chosen friend.

If your noble mind has been hurt by Hafez,
come back, for we have repented of what was said and heard.

I shall give many thanks in the service of the master
if that ripe fruit should fall into my hand.

Interpretation of the fal

Someone very lovely has passed you by and slipped from your grasp, and your heart is left restless. If something you said or did has hurt them, apologise and ask them to come back. They too are reminded not to wound the hearts of those who see truly. Be hopeful: if what you want comes into your hands, give thanks for it.
