Ghazal 14: I said: O sultan of the fair, have mercy on this stranger.

I said: O sultan of the fair, have mercy on this stranger.
She said: following his heart, the poor stranger loses his way.

I said: stay a moment. She said: hold me excused;
how can one raised at home bear the grief of so many strangers?

What does a pampered one asleep on royal ermine care
if the stranger makes his bed and pillow of thorn and rock?

You in whose chain of hair so many friends are held,
how strangely well that dark mole sits on your coloured cheek.

The reflection of wine shows in the colour of your moon-like face
like a Judas-tree leaf on a page of wild rose: strange.

Strangely fallen is that ant-line of down around your face,
though in the picture gallery a musky line is nothing strange.

I said: O you whose night-black tress is the strangers' evening,
beware at dawn when this stranger laments.

She said: Hafez, even friends stand in the station of bewilderment;
no wonder if the stranger sits weary and poor.

Interpretation of the fal

You feel like a stranger with no shelter, and you expect attention from someone who does not understand your situation. Do not blame yourself: their indifference comes from not knowing, not from any lack of worth in you. Stop pleading and put your trust in God. This state will pass, and what your heart has suffered will not go unanswered.
