Ghazal 182: You wrote no account of how you are, and some days have passed
You wrote no account of how you are, and some days have passed;
where is a confidant, that I may send you a few messages?
We cannot reach that high goal,
unless your kindness comes forward a few steps.
Since the wine has gone from jar to jug and the rose has thrown off her veil,
hold on to the chance for pleasure and drink a few cups.
Candy mixed with rose is not the cure for our heart;
mix a few kisses with a few rebukes.
Ascetic, pass safely by the lane of the rends,
lest the company of a few ill-reputed people ruin you.
Since you have named all the faults of wine, name its virtue too;
do not deny wisdom for the sake of a few common hearts.
O beggars of the tavern, God is your friend;
do not look for bounty from a few cattle.
How well the tavern elder said to his drinker of dregs:
do not tell the state of a burned heart to a few raw ones.
Hafez burned with longing for your sun-bright face;
O fortunate one, cast a glance toward a few who are thwarted.
Interpretation of the fal
For several days you have had no word from them, and you have no one to carry your message. The goal cannot be reached without their goodwill: ask them to take a few steps toward you as well. Do not let the good moment slip. Do not tell your feelings to just anyone, and do not look for help from small-minded people: God is your friend.
